A show based on the idea of originality. More precisely, a show extolling the virtue of originality in a world where originality is increasingly of less value. The idea for this grew out of a discussion plagiarism in my ethics class. While plagiarism is certainly an issue of integrity, it is also an activity demonstrating a lack of respect for originality. Ok, to the music. Cortez, the Killer and All ALong the Watchtower -- Ironically, original takes on Neil Young and Boby Dylan by Dave Matthews and Jimi Hendrix. Ed Robinson knocks on heaven's door, we get to Jimmy Cliff sooner or later, and we enjoy the miracle of a Jagger/Stone collaboration. Time to shift gears to Jack White, love interruption (what lyric could possibly be more original?), White Stripes cold, cold night and, surprisingly Joh Lee Hooker fits right in with the underpinnings of what ZZ Top used to make millions. A dedication to a friend in John Colrane and finally, the most surprising lyric ever from Patricia Barber. I mean what could be more original than a love song about fat, ink and crack cocaine? |
